RISE IN GREEN VEGETABLES AND ONION PRICES IN SILIGURI MARKET
By R. Subrata (TNI Siliguri) ~ Edited By D. Prasun (TNI Siliguri)
Webdesk, TNI Siliguri, 06th August, 2015: There has been a sudden rise in the whole sale and retail prices of vegetables in Siliguri and North Bengal Market. This has been attributed to the unrelenting weather condition during this rainy season. Unlike that of previous years, North Bengal districts especially regions like Haldibari, Coochbehar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri etc., which are known as the agricultural belt suffered the brunt of the mini drought like situation resulting in a drop of vegetable productions. This has reflected in today’s wholesale prices of the vegetables especially onions, potato, green vegetables etc. Bikash Saha, a businessman from Siliguri Regulated Market said that the situation may go even worse in the next one month or so and then it may return to normal before pujas. One of the main reason he pointed out is the reduction of green vegetables supply from South Bengal especially, Burdwan and Nadia district, which suffered the most due to the recent floods.
